Best Free Desktop Database |
One of the best selling programs for “micro computers” way back in the computer stone age was a database management system (DBMS) called dBase. It was a huge success, enabling many people without programming skills to develop their own personal or business database for books or customers. It really brought some of the power of main frame computing to your office or home pc – of course on a much much smaller scale; mind you we’re talking about PC running at the “lightning” speed of 4.4 MEGA Hertz. But if you could substitute your roller desk address collection by a dBase application – it was well worth the while. So many small businesses developed in the late evening and early morning hours their own customer relation management system.
Nowadays, with the advanced feature set of our spread sheets (►Best Free Spreadsheet or ►Best Free Office Suite), their ability to sort, manage and analyse your data, the necessity for a Desktop Database may not seem so obvious, but the very moment you have to use and synchronize several tables or realize, your main spreadsheet gets larger and larger because you keep adding column after column, you might well consider the use of a Desktop Database.
What is the best free desktop database?
Unfortunately this question is answered fairly simply. It is OpenOffice.org Base as there is nothing else around qualifying a mention or even a review on beste freeware. There are several applications for very single tasks, but nothing that could really be a replacement for Microsoft Access.
OpenOffice.org BASE

This desktop database management system is part of the free office suite ►Open Office, and as such not a standalone product. So, if you want to use BASE, you have to install the complete Open Office Suite.
BASE aims at replacing MS Access and addresses a broad array of users, ranging from private folks who want to organize their books, CD, video, DVDs, to small businesses managing their customer relations and companies with complex needs and a precise budget for software. We remember: BASE is free, and may be installed on as many computers as you like.
If you’re new to database design, the “Wizards of Base” will help you to create the necessary tables, forms, queries and reports from scratch just by applying common sense, common knowledge and your personal experience with the matter at hand. With the help of the wizards you will be able to create basic desktop databases for a single user, and that is what most people need and want, even most small businesses are satisfied with that.
Working with databases, especially with so called Relational Database Management Systems is not a task for a beginner. To explore the depth and possibilities of this software, interest, dedication and time are the ingredients for success.
