Mozilla Firefox

Firefox is somewhat of an opposite of Opera. When you’ve downloaded and installed this browser, you will find a piece of software doing little more than browsing the net. You’ve got a bookmark manager alright, a password manager, but there’s no email client. Firefox is what you call a ‘slim’ browser initially focusing on one single task: to browse the net.

ImgBurn

Without doubt – our favourite. Possibly for all the wrong reasons – as ImgBurn comes with a very Spartan, minimalistic look and feel.

Exact Audio Copy

Most certainly our first choice. The most impressive capability of this program is its tolerance toward read errors on your probably old (and sometimes dirty) Audio Disks. Very rarely indeed will that result in an error in the sound file as Exact Audio Copy (EAC) interacts very closely with your hardware. On first use a fine tuning is performed to achieve the best possible results, and alas, sometimes, a CD/DVD drive may not be supported.

VLC media player

If you want to play a movie or listen to an audio file, if you want it simple, easy and clean, if you just want it to work ...

freeCommander

The main feature list of freeCommander is a complete wish list for any decent filemanager, as a matter of fact for any filemanager that may rightfully be called: excellent!

Spybot Search & Destroy

Do install Spybot Search & Destroy! It is very easy to use, offers an Easy Mode for beginners, real time protection and an on-line tutorial. This tutorial will help you to understand many of the tasks involved with securing and protecting your PC.

Furthermore the program may help you to turn Adware into common programs, which might violate the respective license agreement. You are well informed by Spybot Search & Destroy and the matter is left to your good judgement.

Paint.NET

This freeware has its origin as an ersatz, a replacement for MS Paint. The features now entitle it to be classified as advanced image and photo editor. The interface is simple, intuitive, and impressive. It presents the pics you’re editing in tabs that display a thumbnail preview of the image.

This functionality can be extended by plugins, which are provided and maintained by the Paint.NET community. There you also find an extensive help, and many, many tutorials.

GIMP

This one is not for the immediate beginner. First get your feet wet with the ones above, find out what image editing is about, what you like about it, what you want to do with it. Then come back. The GNU Image Manipulation Program – GIMP surprises with an unusual user interface which is adventurous at least for those learning the basics of image editing. It will take you a while to realize its benefits - which will be easy when using this professional image editor under Linux.

Best Free Office Suites - LibreOffice

The history of the Personal Computer is one of overwhelming success. Those of you who can remember the early days know using one of the first machines was both a privilege and a pain in the south pole. They were really, really expensive, used an operating system that did not deserve the name, and successful operation was the result of determination, resolve, patience, stubbornness and the will to try it all over again. A now very renowned PC manufacturer used to add a hammer made of foamed material to their PCs, so the disappointed user had some sort of emotional outlet without danger to the apparatus.

Best Free Word Processor

Word processors are probably the most used single program on personal computers. Sometimes a full blown office suite is simply too much, and a basic text editor seems too little. Especially on a private pc, when all your word processing consists of writing a letter, a recipe, or note to your husband and kids. In a professional field you will not go for the “big” solution, if you’re mainly dealing with words – say a sports reporter – and only want to present numbers without doing any calculation, here, a decent word processor will surely suffice.

Best Free BoilerplateText Manager

In the beginning of word processing, the feature of expanding a given abbreviation, say ‘br’ to ‘best regards’, was considered to be awesome. Secretaries spend hours on teaching their word processor to handle those ‘boilerplates’ aka Auto-Complete, in order to save time and avoid unnecessary mistakes.

Text Editor (Source Code Editor)

It is not always enough to have a good word processor. Sometimes, depending on your skills, you need a so called “text editor”, or “plain text editor”. That is a tool allowing you to edit plain text files, files that contain no additional information, the so called “meta data”, or text formatting of any kind, such as bold face, italics, font type, and page margins. You can think of a “plain text file” as a simple sheet of paper without the additional information, much as that sheet of paper you got out of an old typewriter.

Jarte - a light weight Word Processor

In the field of word processors, Jarte is a real light weight with a very fresh design. With a minimal loading time this wordprocessor provides you with all the necessary features for creating and editing short texts preferably. The tool offers also tabs for several simultaneous text windows, and minimizes to the system tray. Very handy. Marked words are checked with the Wikipedia, also to an online dictionary and thesaurus. And here’s a goodie: though its default text format is ‘RTF’ (rich text format), Jarte knows how to open .docx (the new Microsoft file format).

PhraseExpress

This is where PhraseExpress comes in very handy. It resolves the problem of those auto-complete entries residing in your word processor only, when you need them somewhere else, as in your email client. As a text input solution for Windows PhraseExpress not only provides you with static entries, but also analyzes and learns the user’s writing patterns, and then offers auto-complete sentences.

Notepad++

Without doubt, our favourite. It is “Free Software”, meaning you can use it, change it, and distribute it legally and completely free, free as in “free beer” and “free speech” – as they say.

AbiWord – a complete Word Processor

AbiWord is what you want if you also write books, and/or also use Linux. Besides all you possibly can expect a word processing application to do, it opens and saves a lot of formats (OpenOffice, MS Word, WordPerfect, RTF, HTML), you get tables, news paper columns, it checks your spelling, and you’re grammar (English), and also offers ‘format styles’ – a must for bigger documents. Office users will like its mail merge capabilities.

PSPad

PSPad has also been around for years now and is another excellent choice. Its features are greatly comparable to the ones of Notepad++, but there are some remarkable differences which might induce you to have a look.

PolyEdit Lite

PolyEdit Lite is a new face amongst the crowd of light weight text editors. Slim, fast and easy to use, it lets you handle all those word processing jobs for which you don’t want to start a full blown office suite.
