Mozilla Firefox

Firefox is somewhat of an opposite of Opera. When you’ve downloaded and installed this browser, you will find a piece of software doing little more than browsing the net. You’ve got a bookmark manager alright, a password manager, but there’s no email client. Firefox is what you call a ‘slim’ browser initially focusing on one single task: to browse the net.

ImgBurn

Without doubt – our favourite. Possibly for all the wrong reasons – as ImgBurn comes with a very Spartan, minimalistic look and feel.

Exact Audio Copy

Most certainly our first choice. The most impressive capability of this program is its tolerance toward read errors on your probably old (and sometimes dirty) Audio Disks. Very rarely indeed will that result in an error in the sound file as Exact Audio Copy (EAC) interacts very closely with your hardware. On first use a fine tuning is performed to achieve the best possible results, and alas, sometimes, a CD/DVD drive may not be supported.

VLC media player

freeCommander

The main feature list of freeCommander is a complete wish list for any decent filemanager, as a matter of fact for any filemanager that may rightfully be called: excellent!

Spybot Search & Destroy

Do install Spybot Search & Destroy! It is very easy to use, offers an Easy Mode for beginners, real time protection and an on-line tutorial. This tutorial will help you to understand many of the tasks involved with securing and protecting your PC.

Furthermore the program may help you to turn Adware into common programs, which might violate the respective license agreement. You are well informed by Spybot Search & Destroy and the matter is left to your good judgement.

Paint.NET

This freeware has its origin as an ersatz, a replacement for MS Paint. The features now entitle it to be classified as advanced image and photo editor. The interface is simple, intuitive, and impressive. It presents the pics you’re editing in tabs that display a thumbnail preview of the image.

This functionality can be extended by plugins, which are provided and maintained by the Paint.NET community. There you also find an extensive help, and many, many tutorials.

GIMP

This one is not for the immediate beginner. First get your feet wet with the ones above, find out what image editing is about, what you like about it, what you want to do with it. Then come back. The GNU Image Manipulation Program – GIMP surprises with an unusual user interface which is adventurous at least for those learning the basics of image editing. It will take you a while to realize its benefits - which will be easy when using this professional image editor under Linux.

How safe is the Internet?

The Internet ist a public place! See the World Wide Web as a humongous market place or mall!

You find this and that, look around, buy things, have a cup of tea, spend some money and you talk to people, but one thing you know for sure: you're not at home!

So you don't show your money clip, don't talk about your income tax, and keep away from inviting everyybody smiling at you for your next Sunday dinner.

You are careful and responsible!

That's the way to behave browsing the internet too...

anti spyware

Your security measures are neither complete nor sufficiently satisfying if you neglect this point. The net is full of rogues shying no effort to wish for your best – your most private and confidential data, access to your accounts with banks and on-line services, spying on your browsing behaviour, where you go and what you shop, your credit card information asf.

Spyware is a serious malware issue causing damages of more than 10 billion dollars p.a. – here is our choice of the best freeware to help you avoid to increase this sum.

@ anti virus

The theoretical history of the Computer Virus goes back to 1949, first real viruses were born into the fun department in the 70ies, in the mid 80ies they developed into the serious and ever growing threat they are today. Also, what today we call a “computer virus” may not be exactly that, but rather a worm or a trojan. It is no use to split hairs here, the combined pest is correctly called malware, and it is their malicious, malevolent behaviour from which we must protect ourselves.

Viruses are real, they are a danger and they cause a lot of damage. Not to protect your PC from infection is as irresponsible and insane as not to protect yourself in the comparable biological situation. Fortunately, there are three excellent choices, all freeware and they do compete with their commercial rivals effortlessly. In an independent test by the German Foundation for Consumer Protection, Stiftung Warentest, the first two findings were as good or better than paid-for versions, rated 2.5 and 2.1 respectively. The renowned Kaspersky also made 2.5...

Best Free Cleaner

Using your PC is not a traceless activity. Whatever you do can be monitored, collected, evaluated and used to make a profile of you and your activities.

The documents you work on are saved in (most) recent file lists (MRU), you play a song with your Media Player, you download using something like eMule, you burn data with say Nero, read with Acrobat Reader or compress files, all application leave recoverable traces on your system.

When you browse the net, all sites you visited are stored in your browser history, and many sites leave information about your visiting habits and behaviour in a 'cookie', a file on your PC, which can be read and evaluated by anything that knows it is there. Google is infamous for creating these profiles and just in case you do not want your life to become a public record, you might consider to remove the traces at your own discretion.

Personal Firewall

A major line of defence is your Firewall. Correctly it should be called Personal Firewall, but for us Firewall will be good enough. Its job is to protect your PC, your data, your identity. It controls any traffic coming from outside and just as much any traffic going outside. As you wouldn’t grant strangers free access to your flat, your house, your car, you surely won’t want to let them into your Personal Computer. Without your knowledge and consent.

Like its equivalent in the real world, where it is meant to limit the damage caused by a fire, the Personal Firewall is intended to protect you. It prevents a spammer from taking over your Computer, or yet undetected spyware from sending your most private data to an unknown recipient in the net. All this should rightfully be your decision and the Personal Firewall is the tool to help you do that.

But beware! Although we certainly recommend you to use a Personal Firewall, it is just one measure. Do not expect security from installing and using one single piece of software. Security is the result of a strategy including various software components, but also correctly configured email clients, browsers, and an online behaviour that keeps you away from dangerous sites.

The Firewalls presented here completely suffice for your personal needs; you can check for yourselves here ►.

All of them are suitable for novices, easy to install, configure and use. Which one is the best for you is something, only you can decide.

Passwords - the pain and the gain

Passwords! A cumbersome, irritating, vexing subject. We realize the necessity. And also our limited capacity to remember a password. Or even passwords. The known problem is to create a password that is both secure and easy to remember. Those easy to remember are mostly an absolute no-no

Your password should have at least 8 characters and please, do not only use a mixture of upper and lower case letters, add some digits to it and a few special characters like “@, &, #, !” or so.

Uninstalling - how do I uninstall all those programs?

One of the great things about freeware is, it is free. You get it for nothing, so the threshold to install and test is easily overcome. After a while you even might find on your computer more programs than you really crave for, and so decide, to uninstall some of them.

This is easier said than done.

The Windows feature is but a basic one, leaving much to be wished for in speed, and on the other hand some freeware tools may seem more than you actually want. Yes, uninstalling a program also involves duties that cannot be left to a beginner, so these things are best left to an old hand.

How to encrypt

The Internet is a public space. Everything connected to it is in this public space. Think of it as a market place. There are many people, many booths, a lot of buzz, you stroll around, stop here and there, talk to people, do business, but you wouldn’t discuss your marital problems here, would you? And of course, you’d be aware, that some of the nice looking faces might belong to pocket thieves, or even worse rogues, so, you would not leave your purse on one of the tables – no matter how much fun and excitement the place has to offer.
