JDiskReport

Our tool of choice. This freeware offers a simple, intuitive and well organized interface. On start-up you decide, what you’re going to scan: a complete drive or just a folder structure – a folder tree – on your hard disk. After the scan – which can be saved for reuse - a two pane window opens, giving you the well known folder tree view of your hard disk in the upper left, and in the right pane a depiction of the used space in a form of your choice – a pie or bar chart, or a plane table view. So on first glance you see immediately your biggest folder on your hard drive.

This view you can refine further by either navigating in the folder tree or simply clicking on a segment of the chart thus revealing details in the level selected. Tabs at the top of the chart pane let you choose different views, like

  • the top 50 (largest/oldest/newest),
  • the ‘size distribution’ of your files as pie/bar/table view
  • the ‘age’ of your files in the same views
  • the file type in the same views

If you want to have a direct look at the file with your filemanager, you can do so by simply right clicking and choosing ‘open explorer’. As default the Windows explorer will open, but you can select any filemanager you use in the preferences.

These preferences allow adjusting the program to your personal likings, very helpful here the setting for the number of displayed elements in a chart. If you want to change the ‘Look & Feel’ of this software, go ahead – plenty of presets to choose from!

JDiskReport is a perfect example of the quality standards achieved by freeware. It is ‘State-of- the- Art’ Software of the highest professional quality. There’s only one reason to review other software for this purpose, and that is – there is other software for analyzing your disk space. JDiskReport is without doubt our prime choice and recommendation.
