The theoretical history of the Computer Virus goes back to 1949, first real viruses were born into the fun department in the 70ies, in the mid 80ies they developed into the serious and ever growing threat they are today. Also, what today we call a “computer virus” may not be exactly that, but rather a worm or a trojan. It is no use to split hairs here, the combined pest is correctly called malware, and it is their malicious, malevolent behaviour from which we must protect ourselves.

Viruses are real, they are a danger and they cause a lot of damage. Not to protect your PC from infection is as irresponsible and insane as not to protect yourself in the comparable biological situation. Fortunately, there are three excellent choices, all freeware and they do compete with their commercial rivals effortlessly.
