FTP – File Transfer Protocol

FTP – File Transfer Protocol. This subject is not for the very beginner, who doesn’t usually need it. Normally, this protocol is handled very well by your browser and helps you download files quickly; hence the name. With your growing experience and possible wish to directly take part in the World Wide Web you may want to share your thoughts, ideas, insights, pictures, videos etc. with the rest of us and create your own website or weblog. That is the time when downloading with your browser is not enough anymore and you need an FTP client.

When you create your own site, you will have at least two locations: your local PC at home (local) and a site in the net, where we all find you (remote)! So you need to somehow connect your local computer with your remote site, when you want to show us all the nice pics you’ve made and upload them to your (we)blog or website. That is what you need an FTP client for and you may well think of it as some sort of a file manager.

If you only want to facilitate your downloads, you will be well served with a download manager, a piece of software that enhances downloads in many ways.
